It is recognised that the Angling Council of Ireland (ACI) is the governing body for five different branches of the sport of angling throughout the island of Ireland namely, Sea Angling, Coarse Angling, Pike (game) Angling, Trout Angling, Salmon and Sea Trout Angling. These may be divided in to three general categories, Sea, Game and Coarse.
The festival first took place in Ballina in 1964 and was at the time called the Moy Salmon Festival.The original organisers knew that the town was home to one of the best Rivers in Ireland with the best fishing waters and salmon in the country.

IFI was formed on July 1, 2010 following the amalgamation of the Central Fisheries Board and the seven Regional Fisheries Boards into a single agency.
