Educate Together was set up in 1984 as a coordinating body for a small group of schools in Ireland that had been set up by voluntary groups to be multi-denominational, co-educational and democratically run. These principles were enshrined in the Educate Together charter in 1990 which is today the fundamentally binding document of the organisation.
The Educational Research Centre was established on the campus of St Patrick's College, Dublin, in January, 1966. The setting up of the Centre was a means of widening the scope of, and making for greater continuity in, research efforts in Ireland.
